I am no expert on the extremely complex Italian politics but this is what I understand. PR was introduced after WWII to deliberately fragment politics so that no strong man like Mussolini could be successful. The result was that Italian politics were so crippled that governments fell on a regular basis. To deal with this, the Italians recently changed the voting system to award extra, non-proportional seats to the plurality winning party. (The Canadian electoral reformers would call this a ‘false majority.”) The new system will be used in the next election expected in May 2018.

I agree that Italy is not a good comparison for us, but it does illustrate a key point. There is a natural conflict between representative proportional values and effective majority values. The more proportional, the less effective and vice versa.

Promise broken for flimsy reason. What exactly has your government done for us other than proclaiming our inclusiveness….which we were long before you came in power. Health care transfer to our Provincial losers Liberals are inadequate. Hope we survive two Liberal governments. I know I will get an impersonal form response from you just as my provincial Liberal rep has sent one….getting used to being ignored.

I responded to the survey put forward by government and I was disappointed in it for the reasons expressed above. Electoral reform in this country is essential if we are to survive as a democracy. Government’s failure to live up to its commitment re-enforces this view.

Now who are these guys and why are they advertising in that right hand Book of Faces column? Pause to ponder as we are going to have to change our voting system from First Past the Post but what are these guys up to and who is bank rolling them?
